How solar energy works

Solar power can be captured in two primary ways:

Photovoltaic (PV) systems

Photovoltaic effect: Solar panels, which are made of photovoltaic cells, use semiconductor materials (most often silicon) to convert sunlight directly into electricity. When photons from the sun hit the cells, they knock electrons loose from their atoms, creating an electrical current.

Inverter: The electrical current produced is direct current (DC). For home or business use, this DC electricity must be converted to alternating current (AC) by a device called an inverter.
